Escaping the Past: Contributions of the Hippocampus to Future Thinking and Imagination
نویسندگان
چکیده
The hippocampus has long been of interest to memory researchers, but recent studies have also implicated the hippocampus in various aspects of future thinking and imagination. Here we provide an overview of relevant studies and ideas that have attempted to characterize the contributions of the hippocampus to future thinking and imagination, focusing mainly on neuroimaging studies conducted in our laboratories that have been concerned with episodic simulation or the construction of a detailed mental representation of a possible experience. We briefly describe a multi-component model of hippocampal contributions to episodic simulation, and also consider the hippocampal contributions in the context of a recent taxonomy that distinguishes several forms of future thinking.

متن کاملRemembering the past and imagining the future: Identifying and enhancing the contribution of episodic memory.
Recent studies have shown that imagining or simulating future events relies on many of the same cognitive and neural processes as remembering past events. According to the constructive episodic simulation hypothesis (Schacter and Addis, 2007), such overlap indicates that both remembered past and imagined future events rely heavily on episodic memory: future simulations are built on retrieved de...

متن کاملMedial temporal lobe damage causes deficits in episodic memory and episodic future thinking not attributable to deficits in narrative construction.
The medial temporal lobe (MTL) makes critical contributions to episodic memory, but its contributions to episodic future thinking remain a matter of debate. By one view, imagining future events relies on MTL mechanisms that also support memory for past events. Alternatively, it has recently been suggested that future thinking is independent of MTL-mediated processes and can be supported by regi...
